Reproductive Labor and Caring Practices
in Latin American Film and Screen Cultures
As part of the project, we have published a double special thematic issue of Hispanic Research Journal on ‘Reproductive Labor and Caring Practices in Latin American Film and Screen Cultures’ (25.1-2).

The issue brings together eight articles that explore the portrayal of different forms of reproductive labour and care work — such as child-rearing, domestic work, and sex work — in a range of screen media including film, television, social media videos and a digitized photography archive. Many of the articles also focus on the representation of different forms of motherhood, sorority and the formation of non-traditional kin relationships. Countries addressed by articles in the issue include: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Peru.
The issue features an introduction authored by the co-editors, Dr Rachel Randall (QMUL) and Dr Andrea Aramburú (University of Manchester).
The research for the co-editors’ own articles was directly supported by the AHRC project; these articles are:
- ‘Sex Work in Contemporary Latin American Film: Caring, Embodied and Affective Labors’ (Rachel Randall);
- ‘Screening Abundance Beyond the Wet Nurse/Más allá de la nodriza: A Methodology of Care for Reading a Set of Photographs from the Digital Courret Archive (Lima, Peru)’ (Andrea Aramburú) [Aramburu_accepted article]
All the articles in the issue are available open access until the end of December 2025.
